I am a Chartered Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) and a Recognised Practitioner in Urban Design with over 20 years’ professional experience. I have been commitment to the successful management of projects and monitoring the performance of colleagues and professionals.
I developed my career from being an architect to a Strategic Masterplanner and urban designer to plan and design better places for people and the environments they live in. I undertake a human-centred approach to placemaking to create inclusive environments and ensure that they are socially integrated and interactive. My approach developed early in my career after undertaking a PhD in Urban Studies.
Professionally, I work as a Strategic Masterplanner and Urban Design Consultant with international and multi-disciplinary teams within the UK and with international consultancies from the US and the Middle East. I consulted on the physical plan for the regeneration of Kuwait's metropolitan area, coastal regions and Kuwait City’s fragmented urban core. I also worked as part of a team to develop a first prize award winning city masterplan for a new city ‘Madenaty’ on the outskirts of Greater Cairo in Egypt.
I further provide specialist advise as a Design Council Expert (DCE) and as Chair for the Winchester and Eastleigh Design Review Panel. Both roles further enhance my experience in providing planning and design guidance on masterplans and mixed-use regeneration schemes in London and the South East, as well as Birmingham, Brighton, Exeter and Thurrock. To perform these roles, I am regularly involved in relationship building and mediation between, professionals, clients and local authorities.
My academic achievements include winning a Fulbright Scholar Award (2004) and the RTPI Book Prize Award (2014). I was awarded a PhD in Architecture and Urban Studies from Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh (1999) and consequently lectured architectural and urban design modules in various universities including the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan. I have in-depth knowledge of my field and can contribute particularly to the production of high-quality sustainable design solutions.
