Locum Engagement Advisor at The Connection, St Martin-In-The-Fields (2018-07 – Present)
- Supported vulnerable rough sleepers who've been referred by the outreach team to use the night shelter services.
- Explained to new clients their rights when using the shelter, the facilities available, including a hot meal & breakfast and provide clothing if needed and a shower and laundry and helped them settle in.
- There was security but often had to deal with challenging behaviour, helping to resolve issues. Due to Covid the night shelter had to close, and The Bridge was set up in 2020, based in a hotel to provide a bridge between the streets and more permanent housing solutions, offering psychological and medical care offered during the day and drug & alcohol treatment support.
- I also worked nights. There, often around 4 nights a week where my role was usually as a support if they wanted to talk and giving advice on services available; listen to their stories, assess situations, often supporting security if there were issues but always being there if they needed me.
- Some of the women were street workers and we supplied care packages to those who needed them and liaised with police and ambulance services. The Bridge has now closed, and a short-term project set up in its place.
