Hi! My name is Lilly Rowley, I am an 18 year old girl from the New Forest, in England. I am currently staying in Palma, Mallorca actively looking for work on a boat. Growing up I have always loved the sea.
My dad always had personal watercraft’s and when the summertime came around, this would always be my favourite day out. I have an adventurous and inquisitive nature, that I feel a nine to five desk job cannot fulfil. Recently my family and I chartered a boat in Croatia, which sparked the idea that I could have a career based on the sea.
I strongly believe that when you’re doing something you enjoy, you will never work a day in your life. I am hoping to secure a role on a boat as a deckhand. I may not have previous work experience in this position, however, I believe I am the perfect candidate for this role as I am a hard worker, that is eager to learn.
Furthermore, with my existing foundation I am perfectly mouldable. I am an active listener with a can-do personality!

● Started in Bidding and Commercial teams to learn how the business generated its sales and my role including consolidating the opportunities and progress reports to the team and management.
● Recruitment Department next to learn where the talent comes from. Here I was tasked with booking interviews with talent and hiring managers, working with recruitment agencies.

I felt this was a great step into the business world as Roke are a premium employer taking only the highest performers due to the nature of their highly classified military work. However, the business has had to restructure its operations with most staff now working from home as a result of Covid. I raised this with the employer as a major concern for my development, but was told it's not going to change even now Covid has come and gone.
It’s now become unworkable for me as being home based as an apprentice, doesn’t provide the day to day training, support and human interaction required for me to develop. I have also realised working in an office/home based role is not what I want to do. I’m a very sociable person and would like to do a sociable job.

Due to COVID-19 and disruption to my education my parents made the decision to home educate me. I had 1-1 tuition for each subject with set homework. It was a really enjoyable experience, and a great way to end my last year of school, as I have been able to study the subjects more in depth: boosting my grades and confidence.
