As a Senior House Officer (FY3 level) in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department at Calderdale Royal Hospital, I provide high-quality patient care across maternity, gynecological, and theatre settings. I am committed to ensuring safe, evidence-based practice while collaborating closely with consultants, registrars, midwives, and other healthcare professionals. I actively seek senior input when appropriate and continuously work on improving my clinical knowledge and practical skills to enhance patient outcomes.
My role in the Maternity Assessment Centre involves taking detailed obstetric histories, conducting thorough physical examinations, and ordering relevant investigations to establish appropriate management plans. I perform per vaginal and speculum examinations with informed consent and monitor patients presenting with complications. I am responsible for admitting patients based on clinical indications, safety-netting them about red flag symptoms, and providing effective counselling.
I also interpret results and formulate outpatient treatment plans under senior supervision, ensuring all care decisions are patient-centred and well-documented.
Labour, Delivery, Recovery, and Postnatal (LDRP) Unit, Clinics In the LDRP unit, I actively participate in daily ward rounds, documenting care plans and updating patient management accordingly. I carry and respond to bleeps, ensuring prompt response to emergencies, and engage in handovers between shifts to maintain continuity of care. I have developed an understanding of categorisation of Cat-1, 2, 3, and 4 Caesarean sections and am skilled in interpreting CTGs.
I address patient concerns empathetically and aim to improve the overall quality of care. Additionally, I observe bedside scans and participate in the consent process for surgical procedures, enhancing my practical knowledge in obstetric care. I have done episiotomies.
Obstetric and Gynecological Theatres In theatres, I am participating in Caesarean sections, including those involving high BMI patients and emergency (Cat-1) cases. I also take part in gynecological procedures such as surgical evacuations, laparoscopic hysterectomies and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomies (BSOs). I maintain strict adherence to infection control protocols to minimize postoperative complications. I have done cervical smear.
Gynaecology Assessment Unit, Wards, Clinics:
My role includes working in the Gynaecology Assessment Unit, where I take comprehensive histories, perform examinations, and contribute to formulating treatment plans. On antenatal and postnatal wards, I manage acute and chronic complications, prescribe medications, perform VTE assessments, and write detailed discharge summaries. I work collaboratively with colleagues, midwives, and allied staff to deliver holistic, patient-centred care.
I am proficient in using EPR and Athena systems, having completed the relevant training, and hold active working IDs for both platforms. Additionally, I am trained in blood tracking and follow all safety protocols when handling blood products. • Clinical Observer: Obstetrics and Gynaecology: Kings College Hospital NHS Trust, London: March 2025
