Ann B. Stutes currently serves as Assistant Director for Accreditation and Programming for the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). Prior to joining the NASM staff, as a music faculty member she served as an elected member of the NASM Commission on Accreditation and as a site evaluator and consultant for higher education music programs across the United States.
As the Shaw Professor of Music at Wayland Baptist University, Stutes also served as the academic dean for the School of Music and the School of Creative Arts which included oversight of communication, media, and visual arts in addition to music. While serving as academic dean, she continued to teach music theory and, in recent years in collaboration with her colleagues, developed an innovative repertoire-based theory curriculum for use in university music programs. As a member of the summer music theory faculty of Interlochen Arts Camp, she specialized in teaching music theory to elementary and middle school campers.
Stutes earned a Ph.D. degree in fine arts from Texas Tech University, a Master of Music in theory/composition from Northern Illinois University, and a Bachelor of Music in music theory from Southwestern University. As a violist, she has participated in community orchestras and as a church musician, she has directed both choirs and handbell ensembles. As an ongoing professional goal, Stutes is committed to reinforcing the music infrastructure by nurturing the ties between collegiate, public school, church, and community music programs serving musicians of all ages.
