Congress passed a joint Congressional Resolution in 1978 to commemorate Asian American Heritage Week during the first week of May. The first week of May was chosen because two important anniversaries occurred during this time: the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants in America on May 7, 1843, and the completion of the transcontinental railroad – the majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants – on May 10, 1869. On April 2, 2011, members of CFAWL’s Young Lawyers Committee and law students from Barry’s Women’s Lawyers Association visited Harbor House of Central Florida to clean, paint and redecorate the living room, children’s play room and computer rooms at the domestic violence emergency shelter. Last year, Harbor House provided emergency shelter to more than 800 women and children.
