I’m currently going into my senior year at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. Currently I write for my schools newspaper in the sports section covering things like womens lacrosse and a few other topics.
I write for my university’s newspaper (The Duquesne Duke) in the sports section. During the school year a typical week of writing for the newspaper would look like this. A new edition comes out every Thursday so once that happens you get to read what was published, Fridays are budget meetings and we discuss what stories we will write the next week, sometimes it’s the editors of the paper telling me what to write other times it’s stories that I pitched and they like. Then on Saturday’s and Sunday's usually all the sporting events happen so i would go to the game and record key moments or star players, and after words I would interview the coach or players that played well in that specific game. then I would use Monday and Tuesday to write the story and sit down with my editor to edit it together, and then wait until Thursday for it to be published.
experience I’m marketing this past semester I took a digital and social media marketing course where I learned a tremendous amount of useful tools to use when marketing. I also was a digital design intern for a startup company last year called SportsVisio. at SportsVisio I created promotional videos to showcase their product, I created brochures to hand out to people, business cards to hand out to people, and helped in created their logo for the company.
The most relevant education that I have received was from a class called newswriting. I’m this course I learned how to write a story as if it were in a newspaper or online somewhere. I learned to decipher what was super important about a story, what wasn’t so important about a story and where to incorporate it within the story so readers get the most important parts first. Among many other things learned throughout the course, writing for my schools newspaper has also honed my writing and editing skills considerably and has been a great learning experience.
