My name is David Millan, and I have nearly six years of combined experience working in student services and campus support roles. My background includes serving as a supervisor in the weight room at San Jacinto College, a front desk attendant in the Office of Admissions at the University of Houston–Downtown (UHD), and a receptionist for almost two years at UHD Student Counseling Services.
Across these positions, I learned how to manage high-traffic environments, support students in stressful moments, and create a welcoming, professional atmosphere. At UHD Counseling Services, I gained direct experience supporting distressed students by offering a calm and safe space with resources like water, snacks, coloring books, and reassurance while they waited for a therapist. Even though I wasn’t providing therapy myself, these moments taught me the importance of patience, empathy, and attentiveness in helping others feel at ease.
At the UHD Office of Admissions, I served as the first point of contact for prospective and current students, families, and visitors. I provided clear information about admissions requirements, processes, and deadlines, while also handling a high volume of calls, emails, and in-person inquiries. My role required professionalism, discretion, and efficiency in directing students to appropriate departments, assisting with admissions documents, and maintaining confidentiality when handling sensitive student information.
Through this position, I strengthened my communication, multitasking, and problem-solving skills in a fast-paced academic environment.
As a Weight Room Supervisor at San Jacinto College, I was responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the student fitness facility. I ensured the environment was safe, clean, and welcoming by monitoring equipment use, enforcing safety policies, and assisting students with questions about exercise equipment and proper use. In addition, I helped guide and support student staff, maintained scheduling and facility upkeep, and promoted a positive atmosphere that encouraged health and wellness on campus.
Together, these roles strengthened my communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills while giving me hands-on experience in both wellness and administrative settings. These are the same skills I plan to carry forward into my long-term goal of becoming a therapist.
Ensured that students at the schools I have attended were checked in to their proper Counselor At the UHD Student Counseling Services. Making sure they were directed to the proper admissions counselor when I was working at the Office of Admissions at the University of Houston - Downtown.
