Johanna Groene is the interdisciplinary mindset she brings to educational research. In focussing on both literacy and mathematical thinking, Groene’s research invites a merger of mathematical and literacy thinking, two schools of thought that emphasize different symbol systems for making meaning yet rely upon similar cognitive theories of learning. Through bringing together learning strategies from both mathematics and literacy, Groene’s research pushes the field beyond differences in content toward and understanding of disciplinary mindsets.
Jo’s proposed dissertation research seeks to delve deeper into these mindsets asking what can math researchers and instructors learn about mathematical thinking from scholars of reading and comprehension. Also, what can reading researchers learn from close analysis of the cognitive processes involved in mathematical problem solving? The fields of education is in want of such cross-disciplinary analyses.
