Quality Improvement Project: App-Based Mindfulness Training to Mitigate Depression, Anxiety, and Stress in Emergency Department Nurses at Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital (2023-09 – 2024-02)
Implemented a quality improvement project focused on reducing depression, anxiety, and stress in emergency department nurses using a cell phone-based application promoting mindfulness meditation over the course of four months. Measurement used the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21). Depression scores reduced from 3.83 to 3.58, anxiety scores reduced from 4.75 to 2.92, and stress scores reduced from 9.42 to 5.31.
Secondary aims of nursing staff turnover improved from 6.9% of 92 nurses to 5.8% of 92, and medication errors dropped from 6 errors in October 2023 to 0 in February 2024. While depression score changes were not statistically significant, anxiety and stress scores were which demonstrated the usefulness of an application-based mindfulness meditation on the mental well-being of nurses working in the emergency department.
