About
Li-ion, Solid-state battery researcher with a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and 5+ years of research experience in physics-based battery modeling, electrochemical-mechanical-thermal coupling and multiphysics simulation. Experienced in electrochemical cell modeling, COMSOL, PyBaMM, MATLAB/Simulink, Python, and battery characterization including EIS, GITT, CV, and HPPC. Research expertise spans across lithium-ion and solid-state batteries, with a focus on performance prediction, fast charging, multi-physics coupling, and failure mechanisms.
Motivated to leverage experimental data and physics-based simulation insights to advance battery performance, fast-charging strategies and BMS design.
Experience
Assistant Research Scientist - Battery Modeling & Electrochemical Simulation at University of Maryland, ChBE (DOE: BES) (2023-10 – 2026-04)
- Developed a 3D physics-based electrochemical-mechanical coupled COMSOL battery model to predict battery voltage response, nonuniform current distribution, volumetric change and stress evolution. Identified potential failure modes and mechanically vulnerable regions to guide cell structural design.
- Performed an in-situ nanoindenter-based experiment to characterize the V2O5 OCV variation due to mechanical stresses (-0.03mV/MPa), consistent with mechanics prediction.
Assistant Research Scientist - Battery Modeling & Electrochemical Simulation at University of Maryland, ChBE (ARPA-E: EVS4ALL-Joule) (2023-10 – 2026-04)
- Performed P2D electrochemical-thermal simulation of a DRX||Si/Gr lithium-ion cell to quantify the relationship between cathode active-particle size and maximum charging C-rate; designed multi-stage constant current fast-charging protocols, temperature and corresponding cell designs to meet the fast-charging requirements.
- Developed 1D full-cell battery model that account for lithium metal filling process in an open-porous LLZO scaffold. Studied the influences of ionic conductivity, porosity on Li-metal infiltration across the electrode region.
- Constructed 2D Cahn-Hilliard type phase-field model to simulate the lithium metal filling process in open-porous structure with different interfacial lithiophobicity. Predicted the efficiency of open-porous structure as Li hosting active material.
Post-doctoral Associate - Multiphysics Modeling at University of Maryland, ChBE (DOE: BES) (2021-01 – 2023-03)
- Constructed a 2D COMSOL model to examine the electrochemical-mechanical coupling (ECM) effect of ASSB by testing V2O5/LiPON/ Li lateral cell structure.
Post-doctoral Associate - Multiphysics Modeling at University of Maryland, ChBE (ARPA-E: REPAIR) (2021-01 – 2022-03)
- Thermal modeling of ultra-high temperature sintering application in constructing new pipe in old natural gas pipe. Studied the temperature distribution and energy dissipation in different time and length scales. Provided suggestions about controlled sintering temperature and forced-convection cooling strategy.
