School Caretaker · Facilities & Grounds
Send a job offer directly to this candidate
I am a hardworking, hands-on tradesman and engineer with over 30 years of experience maintaining buildings, plant, and grounds across schools, universities, and industrial sites in both New Zealand and Europe. As a registered electrician and registered engineer, I've built my career on precision, reliability, and pride in getting things right and I bring that same discipline to everyday, practical maintenance, fault-finding, and contractor coordination. I've called Dunedin home for close to 25 years and raised my family here, including a son who attended John McGlashan College, so this community means a great deal to me and I want to give something back to it directly.
I'm looking for meaningful, flexible, part-time work that keeps me active, hands-on, and connected to people.
Private Consultant — Senior Electrical Engineer, Design Engineer, Electrician & Project Manager at Various employers (2020-12 – Present)
I provide end-to-end electrical, maintenance, and building services work across schools, councils, and commercial sites. My day-to-day tasks include electrical installation, fault-finding, boiler and heating servicing, and coordinating with outside contractors and suppliers — the same practical, all-rounder skill set a school caretaker role calls for, which I've applied at a senior level throughout my career.
Energy and Controls Lead at Performance Energy Controls Ltd (2021-04 – 2023-06)
I led hands-on delivery of building maintenance, boiler and heating management, and electrical/controls work for schools and councils, including procurement, supplier coordination, and on-site installation and commissioning. I regularly liaised directly with contractors and tradespeople to keep projects and everyday maintenance running smoothly.
Energy and Building Controls Manager at University of Otago (2003-04 – 2020-11)
I held full, practical responsibility for the University's boilers, district heating scheme, generators, and building plant across its Dunedin, Wellington, and Auckland sites for almost 18 years. I managed day-to-day maintenance and safe boiler operation, and I personally led and oversaw the plant, energy, and controls team — supervising staff, coordinating contractors, and consistently maintaining a high standard of upkeep. I also shared this experience externally as a guest lecturer in energy management at the University, mentoring the next generation in practical facilities and energy know-how.
Design Engineer at Switchbuild Ltd (2002-12 – 2003-04)
I combined switchboard design with hands-on construction, assembly, and testing, working closely with workshop staff — an early grounding in practical, buildable, safety-conscious work.
Building Services Consultant at LTG Air Engineering Private Limited (2000-09 – 2002-10)
I carried out electrical and controls work integrated into large HVAC systems, including construction supervision to ensure correct, reliable installation on site.
Master of Engineering (MEng) in Electrical and Electronics Engineering – Technische Universität Berlin
